It can encrypt any file, text or otherwise, into a unintelligible mess of characters. JFScramble supports password protection, also. VERSION HISTORY =============== 1.0-1.1: * Encryption auto-check feature * Status bar with graphical status * Auto-detect decrypt output filename * Picture encryption prevention * Password protection * Options tab * Optional auto-decrypt and extraneous messages * Uninstallation preparation program * Built-in text editor and viewer * Non-encryption marking 1.1-2.0: * Now encrypts any file! * Removal of: * Encryption auto-check feature * Picture encryption prevention * Non-encryption marking * Built-in text editor and viewer * Only 1 encryption method possible * Uninstall program actually uninstalls * Decrypt to default viewer 2.0-2.1: * Faster encryption & decryption * Mini-decrypter for easy viewing 2.1-2.1.1: * Major mini-decrypter creation bug fix 2.1.1-2.2: * Double-click decrypt disabled bug fix * Mini-decrypter removed due to excessive bugs * Bit-shift encryption NOTE TO USERS OF JFSCRAMBLE 1.X/2.0 =================================== Your JFT files from 1.x and 2.0 will not work with 2.2. All you can do is re-encrypt the files with 2.2. NOTE TO USERS OF JFSCRAMBLE 2.1 =============================== There was a feature named "bit-shift pre-encryption in 2.1. However, this feature was not working properly, and any files encrypted using this method are un-decryptable. USING JFSCRAMBLE ================ To start JFScramble, double-click the program. If you've used JFScramble at least once, then you can double-click on a JFE file to automatically start decryption. ****NOTE****: NEVER move the JFScramble program!!! This will make it impossible to completely uninstall it. The screen you start with is under the Encrypt tab. ENCRYPTING FILES ================ To encrypt a file, follow these five steps: 1) Pick a file to encrypt by clicking the Browse... button to choose a file. 2) Pick an output file: Click the Browse... button to type in an output file name (must end in .JFE) 3) Type in a password twice: If you want password protection, then type a password for the file in *both* boxes the exact same way. If you don't want password protection, simply leave the boxes blank. 4) If you want to use bit-shift encryption (a stronger, but more time- consuming, encryption method), click the checkbox indicating that. 5) Click Start Encryption! to start encrypting. The program will disable all of its buttons and show a Stop Encryption! button. Click this to abort encryption. As the program encrypts the file, it will show its status on the status bar. DECRYPTING FILES ================ To decrypt a file, follow the three steps: 1) Pick a file to decrypt: Click the Browse... button to choose a JFE file to decrypt. ***OR*** Double-click on a JFE file (Only after first use) Once you pick a file, the output path and password status appear below it. 2) Choose whether you want JFScramble to decrypt the JFT file into the output path shown above or into the file's default viewer. 3) Click Start Decryption! to start decrypting. The program will disable all of its buttons and show a Stop Decryption! button. Click this to abort decryption. As the program decrypts the file, it will show its status on the status bar. OPTIONS ======= Show status text: Shows the text messages on the status bar. Show graphical status: Shows the yellow status bar when encrypting and decrypting. Show completion/abortion messages: If this is enabled, JFScramble will alert you when encryption and decryption are aborted or completed. Automatically start decryption on double-click: If this is enabled, JFScramble will automatically start decrypting when you double-click a JFE file. When this happens, it is decrypted to a file. View Readme This shows the introduction screen and this readme file. LIST OF MESSAGES ================ Every now and then, you might an error message or two. Also, you'll get dialog boxes often. No need to worry! If you're confused about what an error message or dialog box means, just look it up in this alphabetized list: (Note: Messages marked with * will not appear if you have completion/ abortion messages disabled.) Message: Aborted decryption! * Explanation: You hit the Stop Decryption! button. Solution: --- Message: Aborted encryption! * Explanation: You hit the Stop Encryption! button. Solution: --- Message: Completed decryption! * Explanation: JFScramble completed decryption. If you were decrypting from a double-click, then JFScramble will automatically close when you click OK. Solution: --- Message: Completed encryption! * Explanation: JFScramble completed encryption. Solution: --- Message: Encrypted file must end in .JFE! Explanation: You tried to either encrypt to a non-JFE file or to decrypt from a non-JFE file. Solution: Click the Browse... button again and use a file with a .JFE extension. Message: File corrupted or not JFE format! Explanation: If you're using full JFScramble, then the file you're trying to decrypt is screwed up or not JFE in the first place. Solution: The only thing to do is to get a new JFE file. Message: File not of correct version! Explanation: The JFE file you're trying to decrypt isn't of the version of JFScramble that you're using. Solution: Either get a newer version JFE file, or use the correct version of JFScramble. Message: Incorrect password. Try again. Explanation: The password you entered when decrypting was incorrect. Solution: Try decrypting the file again, and make sure you capitalize the letters that need to be capitals. Message: Passwords are not the same. Try again. Explanation: The passwords you entered for encryption are not the same. Solution: This is meant to keep you from mistyping your password. Try typing *both* passwords again. Also, make sure you filled in both password slots. HOW TO CONTACT ============== Contact name: Joshua Foster Email: joshua_70448@ureach.com Webpage: http://www.jfsoftware.net
