It can filter for specific programs and selectively copy. Also, certain letters can be changed in the filenames. VERSION CHANGES =============== 1.1 -> 1.5 * Faster, safer, more efficient renaming algorithm * Speed stats on the Copy dialog * Right-alignment * Safer file-detection methods * Support for files larger than ~65,000 bytes * File properties like read-only and hidden for copied files * Support for CD-R/RW drives 1.5 -> 1.6 * Saves last settings for next session * Shell extensions (right-click a file and select an action like in Windows Explorer) 1.6 -> 1.7 * Fixed bug: canceling a copy wouldn't stop the program * Fixed bug: copying many files would cause "out of memory" error * Fixed: version displays USING NAMESPEC ============== To start NameSpec, click the NameSpec icon in the Start menu. There are three sections to NameSpec: the Copy From, Copy To, and Alteration sections. In the Copy From section, you can choose which directory to copy from, what file extension to filter for, and which particular files you want copied. If you click a file, you can see what it is called, what type it is, and how large it is. Also shown are the number of files selected and how many bytes they total. If there are no files available, then a "No Valid Files" message appears in the file box. If the drive isn't ready, a "Drive Not Ready" message appears. To mark a file for copying, click the checkbox next to it. To mark all files for marking, click the Check All button. To clear these marks, click the Clear Checks button. If you right-click on a file, you are shown a drop-down menu with two sections. Above the separator, the file's actions are shown, like clicking the file in Windows Explorer. Below the separator, you have four options. There are Check All and Clear Check options like the buttons. There are also a Refresh option on the right-click menu, which reads the directory again, and an Explore... option that brings up Windows Explorer in that folder. In the Copy To section, you can choose which directory to copy to and which letters to change. Next to the directory box, you can see what type of drive you are copying to and how much space is available (before and after). You can even create a new folder easily. In the Alteration section, you can specify how you want the filenames changed. Select a dropdown box to specify the letter changes. For example, to change thisfile.txt to isABCD.tbt, with left alignment, this configuration would be used: Change Filename Letters: -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- |Delete| |Delete| |Same | |Same | |A | |B | |C | |D | -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- Change Extension Letters: -------- -------- -------- |Same | |b | |Same | -------- -------- -------- This tells NameSpec to delete the first two letters in the filename, keep the next two letters, change the fifth letter to "A", sixth to "B", seventh to "C", and eighth to "D". In the extension, it keeps the first letter, changes the second letter to "b", and keeps the third letter. An easier visualization of this is below: thisfile.txt |||||||| ||| vvvvvvvv vvv XX||ABCD.|b| |||||| ||| vvvvvv vvv isABCD.tbt When using files with names shorter than 8 characters and extensions less than 3 characters, there are three option buttons to control filename alignment. These concepts are shown below with the see.me filename: Left-aligned Centered Right-aligned see_____.me_ _____see.me_ _____see._me ||| || ||| || ||| || vvv vv vvv vv vvv vv XX||ABCD.|b| XX||ABCD.|b| XX||ABCD.|b| | |||| || |||| || |||| || v vvvv vv vvvv vv vvvv vv e_ABCD.mb_ ____ABCD.mb_ ____ABCD._be eABCD.mb ABCD.mb ABCD.be As you can see, the filename is either centered around the period in the middle, or aligned to the left or right side. If you want to see what a file will be called after you copy it, then look to the right of the filebox at the Filename After Copy slot, and its future name will appear. Please note that NameSpec will not work with filenames more than the 8.3 standard filename. (It won't even list files whose Windows long names are different from their DOS 8.3 names.) When you're ready to copy, press the Copy Files button. A smaller dialog box appears showing you the status of the program. The top line shows how many files have been copied, and any important messages. In the Current File box, the From and To paths are shown. In the Overall box, the number of bytes copied and percentage done are shown. In the Speed Stats box, the Time Elapsed, Time Remaining, and Speed are shown. Once the files are finished copying, a textbox appears below the Close button showing what files were copied where as what. Click the Close button to close the dialog box. To stop copying at any time, click the Cancel button. HOW TO CONTACT ============== Contact name: Joshua Foster Email: joshua_70448@ureach.com Webpage: http://www.jfsoftware.net
